Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence. ABA is primarily used to treat those with autism, but it's effective for children and adults with psychological disorders in a variety of settings, including schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics. Research shows that consistent ABA can significantly improve behaviors and skills and decrease the need for special services.
Essentially. we take what we know about behavior and apply it to real world situations. How can. we help people find success in situations that they struggle with? How can we make tasks that feel difficult or challenging feel more manageable? How can we engage with the world around us in an authentic and meaningful way?
The first step is to acquire a diagnosis from a psychologist or your primary care physician. Once you have a diagnosis in hand, we are able to start the intake process.
We will start with a basic service that asks about basic contact information, things you have noticed about the patient's behavior, hours of availability, and general information about the patient.
We will spend some time with the patient to observe behaviors and gather information such as triggers, reinforcers, and motivations. We will use this data to create a plan for goals and positive behaviors.
We will then work with you to fully define the goals and what type of services will work best for you. We will design a schedule that combines sessions, supervision, and parent training to work towards the FBA goals.
This is time spent one on one with the patient (or with the patient and family) to help work on specific skills and situations that are associated with the targeted behaviors. This time is used to help create positive alternatives to the targeted behaviors.
Parent training is part of a service plan that helps educate the parent to appropriately help their child when the ABA providers are not around. We cover topics like functions of behavior, reinforcement, life skills, and rapport building but can customize parent training to what is going to best suit your needs.
